21 Century Revolution

                                                                           IN PROGRESS.

My new brief is called "21st Century Revolution". When i was first given this brief i was baffled, i mean how could you choose 1 subject or event that's taken place from the turn of the century theres so much to choose from over the last 14 years from technological advances and medical breakthrough's to the fall in the current economy so after hours of pondering the internet for research i decided if i was to be passionate about it it would have to be something relative , something that i see everyday but cannot improve on my own and something that needs to change. I chose poverty.

Tomorrow morning you will wake up in a warm bed wrapped clean bedding , maybe comforted  by a loved one or maybe on your own, sprawled out in a double bed as your alarm rings out , safe and in your own home. The reality is that at least 17 percent of brits dont have this. 17 percent of people in this country live in poverty , most of which are homeless or socially deprived. Last year a report revealed that the amount of taxpayers' money spent on foreign development projects has soared over the last 10 years by 65% to a staggering £8.3 BILLION pounds. Fair enough all of this helps homeless and starving in third world counties... but what about our homeless ? what about our starving children? why should the taxpayers of this country give millions of pounds a year whilst their neighbour goes hungry ? I believe that help starts at home, giving back to the community, and its people. Giving spare change to a homeless person wont change their lives but its a dam good place to start.

Homeless For The Night

Over the past couple of days ive been meeting homeless people and try trying to find out how bad it actually is on the streets. Ive met some incredibly interesting people from florists to structural engineers, all of which have led perfectly normal lives until something happened which has forced them into certain circumstances which unfortunately  has made them turn to the streets. One person in particular is very memorable to me , she normally sits along Oxford Rd and i try to give her change when i have some .Her name is Amanda , when i met her my first impressions was that she was incredibly nice and down to earth. I made her a hot meal and coffee and she began to tell me her story.

Amanda has a daughter around my age who lives in a 1 bedroom apartment in Liverpool  with her grandmother. Amanda was trying to make a life for her and her daughter in Manchester ad so moved here , leaving her daughter behind to better her chances. Amanda's mum and daughter do not know she is homeless , she tells them she is getting by and living in a bedsit, as she was telling me these things she broke down in tears, she as been on the streets of Manchester for almost a year now and is reluctant to go back home empty handed to spare herself from feeling a failure. Although it was the first time we had really met she seemed very protective of me , telling me at times to hold my bag tight when a certain homeless man walked past , he acknowledged Amanda and tried to converse with her but she said this young girl is interviewing me at the moment to try and get him to leave , after many attempts i succeeded in getting him on his way by giving him a cigarette as he was leaving Amanda gave me a certain look whilst shaking her head, the look was that of somebody telling me not to talk to him and be careful ,after he left she told me that he was mentally unstable , his brother was murdered by a homeless guy called Ronny 4 years and he trawls the streets every night looking for this man , and not to give him a slap on the wrist and send him on his way , he was a man out for revenge and would stop and nothing till this man Ronny had got what he deserves.

So Amanda continued with her story , telling me tat she had been homeless since march 2013 , every day she goes out begging aiming to earn at least 15 quid a day so she can stay in a b&b near Sudehill , when she doesnt make enough she sleeps in multi story car parks where its warmer and dry but the downside to this is the police come and move you along at 5 am and the concrete mattress isn't all its cracked up to be. Ive realised that to fully understand what its like ide have to try it myself , which im doing tonight with no food or sleeping bag just a coat to put over me.

Imperial War Museum.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum , for anyone who is interested in war it is a must see !! I started off in the small room as there is an art exhibition called catalyst on at the moment , which is highly recommend , it really motivated me to involve conflict in my work and explore the ways tat art prompts us to think more deeply about current events.
